A notice at IKEA (宜家) Shanghai has been shared widely among people on Chinese social media. It states that the store’s cafeteria now requires customers to order food before sitting down in cafeteria seats. The policy is in response to an elderly blind dating (相親) group that occupies seats for a long time, eating only their own food brought from home. Do you support IKEA’s new regulation? China Daily readers share their opinions with us.
Lee Xin (China)
The elderly are harmless. They are lonely and are probably hoping to find some company again. If anything, the store should at least sympathize with these old people.
Mbursian (US)
This is more for socializing than for romance. I really don’t picture a home furnishing store as a good dating place for seniors. IKEA could also post a reasonable time limit per visit during peak hours. Or instead of tables and chairs, they could use those standing tables and get rid of the chairs altogether. At least IKEA’s cafeteria isn’t occupied by the dancing grandmas and their PA systems (音響).
SEARU (Australia)
Romance is the most important thing while eating is not that important! So an honorable man always leaves more space for seniors’ love affairs!
Mr. Qiu (Shanghai, China 65 years old)
We’ve been to fast food outlets like McDonald’s — but there are barely any peers there. We feel like aliens — surrounded by young people. If there is another place in Shanghai where elderly people can gather, we are more than ready to pay twice as much and travel further.
TedM (UK)
Romance can arise in many places, even IKEA. However this debate arose as a result of many people taking advantage of IKEA’s generous drink offers, going there to meet and stay with friends without buying anything. IKEA is a shop and it exists to provide a service for a reasonable profit. It is not a public park.
Michel (New Zealand)
To everyone romanticizing this, please also consider that the store has an image to maintain while protecting the interests of other paying customers. It is ugly behavior to take up seats for such a long time while you make others wait.#p#副標題#e#
21. What is the major cause of this new regulation?
A. IKEA store forbid romantic behavior.
B. Eating food brought from other places is not allowed in IKEA.
C. The strong reaction of people on social media.
D. Elderly blind dating groups do harm to IKEA’s business.
22. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. SEARU believes that eating is as important as romance.
B. Lee Xin thinks that the store lacks understanding to the elderly.
C. The elderly prefer McDonald’s to other fast food restaurants.
D. TedM thinks that IKEA should stop offering free drinks to customers.
23. How many people are against this new regulation?
A. 5 B. 4 C. 3 D. 1

“Sam”, the koala, the most famous survivor of Australia’s worst-ever wildfire, is healing well thanks to the efforts of caretakers at a rescue — and she even has a new boyfriend, “Bob”.
Sam, who captured hearts around the world after she was photographed drinking from a firefighter’s water bottle, has also won the affection of“Bob”, another koala whose paws were burnt, caretaker Lynn Raymond said Thursday.
Neither koala is likely to be healthy enough for release in at least four months, and both are being comforted by caretakers for their burnt paws every few hours.
Global interest in the fate of Sam has been intense since a photograph of firefighter David Tree offering her a bottle of water in a burned-out forest was splashed across the Internet, in newspapers and on television broadcasts. The telephone at the shelter has rung continually with callers eager for update on the creature’s condition.
“It’s crazy,” Raymond said with a laugh. “But everybody has been absolutely wonderful.”
Sam was found moving on burnt paws by a fire patrol (巡邏員) Sunday. Tree then held out a bottle of water for her to drink, which she eagerly accepted, holding Tree’s hand as he poured water into her mouth.
After suffering second-and-third-degree burns to her paws, Sam has been sharing a cage with Bob, who took an immediate interest in her when she arrived on Sunday.
Both Sam and Bob were given painkillers when they first arrived, but they’re off the drugs now. The two are still receiving antibiotics (抗生素) and have their bandages changed regularly to avoid infection. The koalas are likely to be in the shelter at least four months, depending on how quickly their burns heal.
24. Why did Sam become world-famous?
A. She drank a firefighter’s water after being saved.
B. She was not burnt at all in the wildfire.
C. She was saved by a firefighter.
D. She fell in love with another koala.
25. How does Raymond feel about people’s phone calls asking about Sam?
A. Disappointed and crazy.
B. Meaningful and necessary.
C. Unexpected and thankful.
D. Annoyed and indifferent.
26. From the passage we know that Bob and Sam________.
A. are taking painkillers right now
B. will be likely to heal in less than four months
C. are off any kind of medicine now
D. are still being treated
27. The passage is probably taken from_________.

A complete “artificial egg” made from plants is set to go global after the US firm behind it revealed major backing from Asia’s richest man. Made from plants, it can replace eggs in everything from cakes to mayonnaise (蛋黃醬) — without a chicken ever coming close to the production process. Hampton Creek’s products are already sold in Whole Foods in California, and now the firm plans to take them on the world’s market.
Today it was announced that the firm has landed $23 million in funding. Backers include Mr. Li Ka-shing, Asia’s richest man and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang. In the last 90 days, the company has also signed partnership agreements with 6 Fortune 500 companies, including some of the largest food manufacturers and retailers in the world — although the firm is keeping their names secret until products go on sale.
We’ve done taste tests against market leaders, and beaten them consistently. In the world of cookies, we’ve trialed our products with everyone from Bill Gates to Tony Blair, both of whom couldn’t taste the difference. Bill Gates became an adviser to the company, and has been one of its most vocal supporters in the Silicon Valley world where Hampton Creek is based. “Companies like Hampton Creek Foods are experimenting with new ways to use heat and pressure to turn plants into foods that look and taste just like meat and eggs,” he recently wrote of the firm. It hopes to allow developing countries to grow and produce their own “plant eggs”. In developing countries, we can also add in things missing from the local diet, helping solve nutrient deficiencies, and we have had initial discussion with the world food program about this. What we want to do eventually is find a way to work with farmers in the developing world to enable them to have new cash crops that can be used. Then we become the kind of company to be feared by the bad guys in the industry.
28. Who invested funds in producing “artificial egg”?
A. Bill Gates and Tony Blair. B. Li Ka-shing and Jerry Yang.
C. Bill Gates and Li Ka-shing. D. Hampton Creek and Li Ka-shing.
29. The company produces things like “artificial egg” in order to __________.
A. turn plants into foods to help diversify food varieties
B. satisfy the needs of an increasing population
C. create the world’s latest scientific invention
D. produce celebrity effect across the world
30. Which of the following statements about “artificial egg” is right?
A. A chicken is definitely needed in the production process.
B. It is actually a plant egg which only Americans can afford.
C. Its taste is more delicious than that of an ordinary egg.
D. It will be used by more people in developing countries.
31. Which of the following can replace the underlined word in the third paragraph?
A. abundance B. evolution C. shortage D. assessment
D
A planned trip to Antigua and Barbuda sometime ago by a former American president suddenly took an amazing turn from the initial plan. The presidential aircraft could not land in Antigua and Barbuda. It was reported that the runway of the airport was too short. Therefore, the aircraft had to land in a nearby country and they came into the country by road.
Everyone has a runway by which events enter his life. The events here could be favors, miracles, connections, job opportunities, etc. The size of your runway determines the level of results that will be attracted into your life.
I have a story of two good friends. They finished high school together. One wanted to further his studies while the other decided to look for a job. As time went on, the one that wanted to work was always there to support the other one especially in the area of fees in school for a long time. As destiny would have it, they both lost contact and after a very long time, they met again but on a very different level. The one that added values to himself by going back to school had stepped up greatly to become the general manager of a big company and the other was just a little lifted. So it was time to pay back. The one of general manager could only support him financially and make him the chief driving officer in the company. Even though he would have loved to give him a higher post, he was not qualified especially in terms of skills, orientation (方向), experience and so on. In other words, his runway was too short for such an opportunity.
Everyone must increase in knowledge and training. You must step up in your education level, business and communication skills. Your relationship with people must improve by being a good person. Your runway is enlarged anytime you add values to your life. It is never too late to start in life because every stage in life is a good place to begin.
32. In the first paragraph the president had to change his plan because __________.
A. the weather condition was bad for their journey
B. they couldn’t go into that country by their plane
C. they wanted to visit the neighboring country temporarily
D. the president had to deal with something back in his country
33. The two friends had different final results because ____________.
A. they lived in different countries B. one always wanted to beat the other
C. they had different education levels D. they studied in different high schools
34. What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. How to enlarge the runway of the airport.
B. How to improve ourselves and become better.
C. How to build up relationship with a good person.
D. How to add values to others’ life.#p#副標題#e#
